How To Work At Home: Retire With Style

Hey! Where's The Cocktails and Sunscreen

If you are a mature adult between the ages of 40 and 75, then you are probably facing some of the same life challenges that I am: aging parents that need constant care, raising grandchildren, supporting children or grandchildren in college or the rising cost of health care. Perhaps you need to remove yourself from the workforce due to health reasons. You are dead broke, and worry about how you will survive retirement. Under these circumstances, it can be a challenge to maintain a quality of life that fits an active, and independent lifestyle. Retirement, sunscreen, and cocktails have wandered off to enjoy life without you.

Now The Fun Part:

Taking Financial Independence To The Next Level

Baby boomers are the trendsetters, the organizers, the Upsetters, and the nonconformists. They are fun, savvy and wise adults who are heading toward retirement with sunscreen and cocktails in tow. How? They are becoming online entrepreneurs. The mature adult has taken the internet by storm.

According to The Pew Center, one in four people use the internet as a source of income. Thirty-two percent say the internet is their sole source of income, and that percentage is rising by 3.4% every year.

Most employers are not sensitive to the needs of our generation. Your work schedules and time off needs are not met. Employers enforce the same rules on the mature adult as if they have the same responsibilities as younger generations. This insensitivity is forcing baby boomers to seek other avenues of employment.

According to The Pioneer Institute "A TransAmerica Center survey published last year revealed that less than half (46 percent) of the retirees who participated believe they’ve put aside a large enough retirement nest egg. Many older adults simply can’t afford to stop working, and the growing number of Americans who are opting to stay in the workforce illustrates the few options they have for future financial security."

  • 60% lost value in investments because of the economic crisis
  • 42% are delaying retirement
  • 25% claim they will never retire (currently still working)

You Don't Say

Advancements in technology allow you to bank online, pay your bills online, and shop online. I recently began doing my grocery shopping online. You join online social networks. You Google health, recipes, and do-it-yourselves. You watch YouTube and Netflix. Face it… we of the mature generation are technology savvy. Technology has helped us to become independent and to have a lifestyle unburdened by time-consuming activities.

Please: Remove Me From The 9 To 5 So I Can Go Fishing

I spent several years searching for the right online source to generate an income. Removing myself from the nine to five was my main motivating factor. There are many ways to earn money online from taking surveys to writing e-books.

However, Affiliate Marketing is perfect for those seeking the extraordinary and it's the most effective and least expensive solution to achieve your money goals. Affiliate marketing gives the biggest payout in both money, and satisfaction of owning your own business. Generate a nice income and enjoy your retirement years without financial worries.

The concept is simple:

  • A company, such as Amazon, Home Depot, or Hobby Lobby, look for affiliate marketers to promote their products to the public. More than 15,000 companies rely on affiliate marketers to earn revenue for their company.
  • You, the affiliate, promote these products or service through a link on your website built specifically for that product.
  • A buyer of the product or service clicks a link on your website earning you a commission for every item sold on your page.

No Experience Necessary

Affiliate marketers rarely go into this business knowing anything about marketing. Nor have they ever set up a website. They learn through trial and error or find a good training program that teaches them how to build a website and market products. Many training programs offer "Affiliate Marketing for beginners" classes with little to no money to start.  Check out my Affiliate Marketing Review Page to find out about these programs and what they have to offer.

The Perks To Affiliate Marketing

It's A Billion Dollar Industry

Affiliate marketing is a billion-dollar industry that is prospering. Online stores and services is the primary shopping experience for two-thirds of the world population because of its low-cost incentives and convenience.

Work from the comfort of your own home or anywhere you like

More than two million people work from home because it has many perks. You can do your job whenever and wherever you want. Whether it’s in the Fiji Islands or an Italian village, you decide where your office is located. You can work everywhere as long as you have an Internet connection.

You can spend more time with family and friends with a work to life balance. Take a vacation whenever it pleases you. And I guarantee you will have no more bad days fantasizing about setting the office on fire.

Unlimited income potential and little start-up cost

Most businesses require a lot of time and thousands of dollars in start-up capital. But with an online affiliate marketing business, you don't have to wait months to get started. You don't need to wait for a loan approval. You can do it right now.

Marketing on the internet is cheap. You don’t have to worry about production cost because the product is developed by the seller. You don’t need a brick and mortar building or hire employees.

Convenience and Flexibility

It's flexible because it takes only one product to be successful. Or, you can create multiple products on different websites to market your links. The choice is solely yours to make.

Affiliate Marketing is an asset

Affiliate marketing is like any business. And like any business, it can be a turnkey operation. Once your online business is established, you can sell it to someone else for a large profit. Once you sell your business, you can start all over again with a new online business.

Global market

Online marketing gives you the opportunity to reach people all over the world.

Mental stimulation

Running an online business is fun. Imagination and creativity play a huge role in a profitable online business. The more creative your content the more memorable it is.

No storage - no shipping

You don’t need to worry about storage, packing or shipment of the product. The seller of your product takes care of this for you.

Don't Waste Your Time

Many of you have spent a great deal of time searching for the perfect work at home job. You end up on websites with headlines such as "The Best Work At Home Jobs" or "Find Real Work At Home Jobs." They list jobs that require skills very few of us have. They are rote, boring and pay very little.

Here is a list of jobs you will find on these websites and the average hourly salary:

  • Virtual Assistant: $16.48 per hour
  • Call Center Representative: $13.29 per hour
  • Medical Transcriptionist: $15.28 per hour
  • Travel Agent: $15.10
  • Teacher: $1500-$2500 every 3 months
  • Editor: $21.01

These jobs require large blocks of time to complete tasks. This negates one of your reasons for working at home. The hourly wages may be enough to pay the bills, but you won't be able to afford that much-needed vacation.

And at the end of the day, you are still working for someone else.

You Are Here Because You Have A Goal

You Are Seeking Change

Work from home on your own schedule while earning a good income is a great beginning to a new life. Enjoy retirement as it was meant to be enjoyed.

You can start your own business and make a lot of money with no financial obligation.
  • Need instructions for building a website?
  • No idea what products to promote or how to promote them?
  • Don't feel comfortable giving out your credit card number?

No worries. I've got you covered. These were my worries too when starting my own business. So, I dedicated this website to those who want to own their own business and removed the fear of being scammed.

No credit card is required to join and you can start as a free member and remain a free member for as long as you like. If you feel this business is right for you, then you can become a premium member for $49 a month with more perks and bonuses.

But you must take action toward financial independence. It will not come searching for you.

  1. Hi Deborah,
Triumphant Discoveries is a great site with lots of good information.
I am a baby boomer retiree trying to earn some extra money like so many other baby boomers. Looking at the income from pension plans and retirement funds my wife and I find ourselves in the reality of not being able to sustain the lifestyle that we enjoyed for the past 40 years of working.
I’m not saying life isn’t fair, it isn’t, but the fact is that we don’t have to sit back and let it be that way. Our retirement way of life is in our hands and affiliate marketing is a good way to supplement income.
Thanks for the article and keep up the good work spreading the word that there is a solution.

    • Hi Ed,

I was quite surprised to learn the number of boomers that use affiliate marketing as a full time income or to supplement an existing income. It’s very exciting. Thank you so much for commenting on my site, and I wish you much success in your affiliate marketing career.

  2. Hi Deborah. As you stated in your article, what took place back in 2008 regarding the financial crisis upset the future plans of millions of people not only in the U.S. but worldwide.

Many of us, (and I’m currently 60-years old) now have to worry about having money with the average life expectancy of human beings edging up higher statistically compared to even 30 years ago.

Affiliate marketing, as you proved in your article, and if done correctly, could potentially allow an individual to have income coming into a work-from-home business for years well down the road. It would be a matter of finding the right training program that also provides the tools and support that would allow a motivated individual to understand all of the concepts required in building a successful business.

I could not help but notice in another article linked to this one that you promoted Wealthy Affiliate as being the best type of training program that a person could possibly join. I, too am a member of WA and have had my still growing business benefit from what is available at this great organization.

The fact that affiliate marketing does not require an individual to have to worry about storing and then shipping products to customers and in fact is very cost effective makes it a much easier bet to turn the venture into a successful business as opposed to getting involved in a number of fraud MLM (pyramid scheme-like) opportunities that still can be found on the Internet.

    Great article, Deborah!

    • Hi Jeff,

I can’t stress enough the importance of finding a good training program. It is so beneficial for the beginner affiliate. Wealthy Affiliate is the best training program on the market with over 800,000 members to date. I was hard pressed to find negative reviews or concerns about Wealthy Affiliate when I wrote the article, so the con’s section in the article are a little lame lol.

It pleases me to no end when I hear from fellow affiliate marketing Boomers. I hope you are spreading the word about the benefits of affiliate marketing to every Boomer you know lol. Thanks for stopping by, and have a great day.

  3. Exactly like you said here, you need to box or talk it up online tools, integration, training so they can seek out the most effective sources for rendering use the service in Internet marketing It certainly takes time and skill but so does everything else right. Anything worthwhile will take getting to work. Business investmentment and pushing yourself to the edge!

    • Hi Andrew, trying to piece together a website without guidance and learning tools is bold. However, it is not a smart business move. You wouldn’t open an ice cream shop and expect it to do well without knowing about ice cream, location, and basic business economics. It is the same for an online business. Learning affiliate marketing has been a wonderful experience for me. Training courses have allowed me the time to create a website that it profitable and I can be proud of. Thanks for your input on the importance of training courses and learning tools.

  4. Hi Deborah,

Thanks for your post on this. Those are some interesting stats regarding how many people are making an living online. I didn’t realize that it was so much! I’m just getting started on an affiliate program myself so can relate to the low startup costs and how fun it is to learn.

I was wondering how successful you have been and what kind of timeline was this success achieved?

    • Hi James,

When I first began researching the statistics on online entrepreneurs, I too was amazed at how many people use the internet to make a living. Some of the best sites for stats are The Pew Center, Nielsen, Alexa, and Internet World Stats.

Success is different for all of us. I set small goals and determine my progress based on those goals. Each goal I accomplish is a success. Never, ever start your affiliate business based on monetary goals. Build a website and learn how to get visitors to your site. Make this your main focus. The money will come once you have established your website as an online presence. This could take two months for some and several months for others. Google is the almighty god of affiliate marketing. Learn how to please Google by continuously educating yourself. Training courses from those who have been in the business for several years is a great place to start.

I love hearing from fellow affiliate marketers. I wish you all the best on your journey to financial independence. Thanks for stopping by.

  5. Hey deborah,

I am a millennial that is currently doing affiliate marketing because I want financial freedom. I am also doing this because I want my business to be able to retire my parents if God forbid the stock market crashes and I can give them a bailout. I don’t wish for such a thing to occur and I don’t want to cause panic but with markets trading on highs these days, I question if its going to be over soon. I have studied finance and a lot about markets and economics to know what happens when bubbles like these occur.

Without getting to much into that side, I have to say I am happy to read from your post that most of the boomer generation (my parents fall into this category) is moving online for another source of income. How can I convince my parents to jump on this as another source of income? My dad is good with technology and the internet but I don’t think it has occurred to him to leverage it into making money. I certainly don’t want to force it either.

Would love to hear your thoughts,

    • Hi Jesse, that is a tough one. My drive to seek an online income is fear of not being able to live comfortably after retirement. I do not want to rely on my children to take of me. Fear of doing without can be a very motivating factor when it comes to trying something new. It is my understanding that many baby boomers are turning to an online business for the same reason that I did. Have you discussed affiliate marketing with your parents? Perhaps if you show them the steps to building a website, and how rewarding it can be it will spark an interest.

Affiliate marketing can seem daunting at first, especially for those who know nothing about it. It is a true “no experience required” business. Maybe if your dad reads my page What Is Affiliate Marketing he will get a better understanding, and it may motivate him to take that first step. I love everything about affiliate marketing as I am sure you do too. Thank you so much for sharing. I wish you luck, and please let me know how it turns out.

  6. Hi, Deborah,

With my turning 60-years old in about 5 weeks, I can attest to the fact that seeking financial independence for any person 50+ years of age is always a goal.
Especially with your promoting Wealthy Affiliate, personally I believe that promoting what this outstanding company has to offer to people 50 years and older can produce greater versus promoting it out to college age students 18 – 21 years old who:

1). Often are in need of money quickly – WA is not a get-rich quick scheme.

2). Have heavy academic workloads in their respective majors that would preclude them from putting the necessary time and effort to grow a financially successful online business.

With people living longer than ever and along with that the cost of living continuing to rise it is a fact that a majority of people who reach retirement age 62 – 65 years old simply do not have the savings built up over years in the workforce to simply sit back and do nothing regarding bringing in more income.

Plus, as you hinted in your article, it is always much better for a person age 60+ to be doing something daily to keep him/her intellectually stimulated. Running an online business is the perfect task regarding daily activities.

    • Hi Jeff, I am happy to hear that you are turning 60, and are an affiliate marketer. I hope you are doing well with your site.

Intellectual stimulation is so important in fighting off dementia and Alzheimer’s. Affiliate marketing is one of the better options for mental stimulation because of the creativity, and learning tools it takes in building, and maintaining a website. Technology changes daily, and there will always be something new to learn. My goal is to get more baby boomers out of the nine to five work force, and into a life of ease and stability. Thank you so much for stopping by. Best wishes to you.

  7. Hi Deborah,
This is indeed a wonderful information you have shared with everyone. Yes many think that technology is only for the younger generation, but as you said many older people are also making good use of technology.

And like you said, they can equally make some passive income online by means of technology. For me though not a mature adult, I hate the 9 to 5 job where you are always under pressure to work for other people. And I think mature one today can get some independence from this 9 to 5 jobs if they make good use of the internet.

My self I have been looking for ways to do something online that will generate some income for me, and I think that of the many online job, Affiliate marketing will be good for me, since I want total independence to be able to work on my own.

I will try your recommended program right from here. Thanks a lot

    • Hi Stephen, I too do not like working for other people, though I have done it for the last 40 years. Not as rewarding as I hoped it would be. Affiliate marketing has been a rewarding experience for me, and I have met some great people who share my passion for it. I am happy that you have decided to join the affiliate marketing family, and I wish you great success. Thank you so much for stopping by.

  8. Hello Deborah
thanks for sharing your tips on retiring happily(with money in the bank).Physically, im sure baby boomers are all ready for retirement, financially, not many are ready for retirement.
Now as you mention in your post, it`s never too late to put finances in order and enjoy a comfortable retirement without pinching pennies which is what happens to most pensioners.
Now you mention taking surveys to earn extra income online, I have tried surveys and do feel they are not worth the time, taking a survey for 30 minutes and earning$1 is way too low.Having said that, depending on where you live geographically, surveys can be far between.
Affiliate marketing sounds like a better way to make money online and having said that, I believe it`s more lucrative than most online businesses.
Thanks for sharing, very informative and well written.

    • Hi Roamy, I share your opinion on taking surveys as an online income. I tried the survey taking route, and ended up disappointed because it was far from rewarding in creativity, and there was very little money to be made. Affiliate marketing is a business, and you can be as creative as you want while earning quite a bit of money in the process. However, it is very important to choose the right training program for success. I am glad that you enjoyed your visit to my site, and I wish you all the best.

  9. Hi, Deborah, and I want to tell you what a beautiful site you have made, and very informative, too! I’ve been involved in a number of ‘make money on the net’ deals, and like you, I came across a number that were scams. The effort you’ve put into creative content and enlightening information certainly shows, and the result is very useful to me. Wealthy Affiliate has gotten a gold star from me, so it was good to see someone else who has come to the same conclusion. Thanks for a great read!

    • Hi Bobby, thank you for your warm comments. Visitors to my site are very important to me, and when they leave I want them to feel like the time was well spent. I am such a proponent of affiliate marketing, and have spent a great deal of time making sure that the information they get from me will help them to make an informed decision. Wealthy Affiliate is by far the best program for affiliate marketing training, and they get a gold star from me too. Thank you so much for stopping by.

  10. Greetings Deborah! I found your post very informative. Being a single mother, I mostly spend my time living in the day to day. I haven’t really thought much about retirement. Today thanks to you, I have. I’m really glad you like wealthy affiliate, I just recently joined the community and I have found it very welcoming and informative. I’m very glad to know I am on the right path, thank you!

    • Hi Tanya, I was a single mother of three for fifteen years, so I understand the difficulties associated with that. The responsibilities of raising children alone leaves little room for thoughts of retirement. You are definitely on the right path, not only for your retirement, but for the near future of your children. Keep at it, Tonya, even if you can only spend a couple of moments here and there to accomplish your goal. It may seem as if you are not progressing as quickly as you would like, but one day you will check your stats, and bam… you have made your first sale. The feeling of accomplishment you gain from that is well worth it. Welcome to the affiliate network family, and thanks for stopping in. I wish you all the best.

  11. All of this is soo true. I am struggling to set up an internet business and create a passive income source. I don’t mind working but if I could I would retire tomorrow and I am 45. There are soo many other things to than to work. Life should be fun but work is not always a passionate activity.
On top of this I know my pension is not going to be good so I would have to continue working after 65 and there is no way I would do it so I will continue try to create financial independence.
Thank you for a great post.

    • Hi Jojo, it is difficult to find passion in a nine to five job when working for someone else. A lot of times we feel as if we have chosen the right career, something that will be a good experience, only to be disappointed by the strict structure, and apathy we often get from a boss or coworkers.

I too knew I would have to make changes in my life if I wanted to have an enjoyable, financially stress free retirement. Affiliate marketing is such a good fit. Nothing is more rewarding than being your own boss, setting your own hours, and make good money doing something you love. I am pleased that you are part of the affiliate marketing family. If there is anything I can help you with along the way I would be more than happy to. Thank you for stopping by, and I wish you all the best.

  12. This was really interesting and informative to read. Actually… I’m still just a 90’s kid, but even still; I’m concerned and motivated to keep thinking about my future. I started working when I was 13 in retail, luckily so young since my family owned a shop. So I have done my 10 years in the retail 9-5 business-type lifestyle. I think it taught me many good values to work, and gain experience about customer service…. but I am so ready to be done with that! I have recently been looking and discovering the potential to earning income online.

I have also checked out Wealthy Affiliate, and believe 100% it will teach me the means I need to be successful online. I am willing to put in the time and work in the beginning, so that in the future, I can be like you said… only have to devote about 10 hours a week to actively keep up online. The rest – will be time for myself! Cheers! xx

    • Mei Scarlet… what a beautiful name. You are never too young to be concerned about your future. Affiliate marketing should do you well as you have many years ahead of you to improve your craft in the business. Many times I wish I had found affiliate marketing years ago. Wealthy Affiliate is a great place to learn affiliate marketing. I have heard that once you go there you will never leave lol. I wish you all the best.

  13. Hi Deborah, just read through your site and think you have a lot of information that is useful to many people. I am not a baby boomer (Gen X’er here…) however, my wants and desires pretty much line up with the what you have described here on your site. I appreciate all the info you have provided and really liked your breakdown of the different affiliate marketing reviews. Keep up the good work!

    • Hi Steve, there are so many affiliate marketing training programs. It’s convenient to have them grouped onto one site so others can make an informed decision on which program is best for them. This information is useful to all ages… my baby boomer friends, and my Gen X friends. Thank you so much for visiting, and leaving a comment. Come again, and have a great day.

  14. Thank you for this wonderful and informative information! Your site is so great and I really enjoyed the reviews on the different affiliate programs that are out there. I started out with Wealthy Affiliate and that is where I plan to stay, but it is nice to know what else is out there! Your site was very fun to read. I enjoyed every minute of it! I can’t wait for more! Great work!

    • Hi Misty, Wealthy Affiliate is one of the best programs for affiliate marketing in the business. I have read the many reviews, 840,000 people are in the WA community, and was hard pressed to find one that was negative. It is nice to have WA visitors to my site. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your visit, and hope you come again. Have a great day.
